The 2018 3-in-1 Charity Project

Within the framework of the project entitled "Dona l'acqua" (Donate Water), made possible by the partnership between the „Fondazione Butterfly onlus“ and the "ECC-SDCOAd" (Catholic Secretariat of Adigrat), three new wells will be built in 2018 in the districts of Irob and Golomekad, located in the eastern zone of the Tigray Region in Ethiopia.

In this area, projects have been implemented for years to provide the rural population with access to drinking water.

In 2018, SANUSLIFE INTERNATIONAL has decided to entirely fund the realization of this three-part project, exclusively through the purchases made in the SANUSSTORE online shop and thus with your help, too.

3 communities, 3 wells

The "Fondazione Butterfly onlus" foundation will be in charge of the project planning and preparation and together with the local partner will take care of the technical execution and financing, while the "ECC-SDCOAd" will be responsible for the implementation of the project and the organization of the inauguration ceremonies and so on. The goal of the project is to build a total of three wells in the following woredas (districts):

  • GAMADA (Irob)
  • HARYAYATO (Irob)
  • MEDAY (Golomekada)

Due to the lack of electricity, all wells will be equipped with a hand-operated mechanical pump positioned at a depth of 60 to 70 meters. Learn more about the project… To learn more...

The direct and indirect beneficiaries

Each well will offer direct access to drinking water to about 150 families living in its immediate vicinity, which corresponds to about 1000 individuals. In addition, a large number of inhabitants of the neighboring areas will also benefit from this project.

The maintenance of the wells

When the construction of the well is completed, a "Water & Hygiene Committee," made up of residents of the village, will be set up and, in collaboration with the competent local authorities, will take care of the maintenance of the well. In particular, a guardian will be elected to supervise the functioning of the plant and report any deficiencies. In this way, his presence will assure the system’s full efficiency.

Some facts about Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the largest and most populous country in the Horn of Africa, with 1,098,000 square kilometers of land and a population of over 100 million. The population has a growth rate of 2.5% per year, which corresponds to an annual increase of about 2 million inhabitants.

About one fifth of the population lives in urban areas, while the majority (85%!) live in extreme poverty in rural areas.

The Tigray Region...

The Tigray region, in the North of Ethiopia, covers an area of approximately 61,500 square kilometers, or 5.6% of the country's total area. Tigray has more than six million inhabitants, 85% of which live in the countryside. This region was devastated by a 20-year civil war that destroyed almost the entire infrastructure of the country and caused a severe economic and social crisis, leading to the impoverishment of the population.

... and its economic situation.

Nevertheless, agriculture still plays a major role in the economy and ensures the survival of about 90% of the population. However, only 8.75% of the population owns more than two hectares of land, while 14.31% owns less than half a hectare. Eastern Tigray is subject to recurrent droughts and Irob, the project’s target area, is one of the most affected by food insecurity. Precisely because agriculture is the fundamental factor in securing the survival of the local communities, droughts in particular have a negative impact on all aspects of life; intestinal diseases, affecting mostly children, is widespread, mainly due to the domestic use of water from unsafe sources (especially stagnant water).

The investment locations

The Irob woreda The Irob district is located about 150 kilometers north of the town of Makelle and covers an area of about 850 square kilometers in a rugged zone of steep mountains and deep valleys. In fact, the altitude varies between 900 meters above sea level in the valleys and 3,200 meters above sea level at the peak of the Asimba mountain.

The Golomekada woreda The Golomekada district covers an area of 59,143 hectares with a population of 102,326 inhabitants. The capital, Fatsi, is located at an altitude of 2,510 meters. The main activity is agriculture with wheat, barley and teff (Eragrostis tef, a type of millet) crops. Wells and natural springs make a significant contribution to the survival of these people, as the area is extremely dry.
